What ETS offers its students is a way to gain practical experience in the job market to aid their careers right from the start. And it's not just jobs in Montreal -- ETS is affiliated with companies and schools in Asia for exchange programs. With such a wealth of information and tools available, it's no wonder ETS students have created some of the most forward-thinking robotics and mechanical creations in the province.
Students have the ability to see their inventions take shape from an idea on paper to an actual working machine thanks to the machines and technologies available at ETS. Because of the resources available, it's not a surprise that student projects include such accomplishments as the Éclipse (solar powered car), Photon (solar powered boat), OMER 5 (manual propulsion submarine) and many other environmentally friendly inventions that house impressive technologies for student projects.
It's clear the preservation of the environment is high on ETS student's minds. Stepping onto the Electricity facility floor one is greeted with a Honda Hybrid vehicle parked squarely in the middle of the hallway, rather like a mascot for their ecological studies.
Perhaps it was the chill in the air that drew my attention, or just the pure genius of the idea, but the most alluring student project on display that day had to be QUIETS, the ecological snowmobile. The ski-doo began its life as a regular MXZ Rev 2003 from Bombardier and rapidly transformed into an quiet, efficient and environmentally friendly machine.
The team that worked on QUIETS succeeded in reducing the snowmobiles engine noise by expanding and extending two chambers beneath the center of the vehicle for engine noise, coating the two front skis with a friction-reducing Teflon and removing a rear suspension chain to make the ski-doo that much quieter.
Equipped with hybrid-like motor that runs on both electricity and fuel this snowmobile produces 35% less pollutants than the average ski-doo. QUIETS has participated in Clean Snowmobile Challenge and succeeded in placing first in acceleration and maneuverability in 2004, amongst other winnings. The 2006 competition saw QUIETS bowing out due to a mechanical defect; however the future remains bright for this green winter machine. Not bad for a student project, if you ask me.
Nestled in the heart of downtown Montreal, École de Technologie Supérieure is more than an educational diamond in the rough; it's a veritable cornucopia of technological opportunities for students of all ages and all walks of life. If understanding the inner workings of what makes the world "turn", then ETS has the ability to help further that desire -- go ahead, get your hands dirty.
