Stefano Domenicali, the director of the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team, has hinted recently that Red Bull Racing chief designer Adrian Newey and two-time World Champion Sebastien Vettel could one day work together at Ferrari.
Newey, who designed the championship-winning Williams, McLarens and Red Bulls during the past two decades is highly respected but commands a very high retainer. Newey designed the Red Bull-Renault RB6 and RB7 that captured the last two F1 championships.
Talking to Sky Sports News, Domenicali declared: “I think that Adrian Newey showed his capability in a fantastic way in the last couple of years. But what he would like to do in the future, well we will see”.
However, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo sais he was less enthusiastic about the idea.
"I have confidence in our technical staff," Montezemolo is quoted by Italian sports paper La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“And furthermore the meeting I had with him in 1997 was not exactly positive. The idea that his wife had of Italy was that of some kind of a third world country. But if he were available again and changed his ideas about our country then why not?" Montezemolo added.
Although Domenicali says that Fernando Alonso is still one of the best F1 drivers on the market, he admits Sebastian Vettel could one day race for Ferrari.
“Never say never. Last season, with the pole positions and the number of victories that he achieved... In comparison, if you look at his achievements with the others... So we will see," Domenicali said.
