For the first time the Pirelli Formula 1 tires were tested on a circuit of the World Championship calendar and on such a high-speed circuit, with Romain Grosjean replacing Nick Heidfeld at the wheel of the Toyota TF109.
Grosjean, a former Renault F1 driver, did brief stints, not more than five laps each, stopping for as long as thirty minutes between one and the next.

422race.com reports that the unofficial lap times set by Grosjean were around 1:27, about three seconds slower than the latest Grand Prix's fastest lap.
Also in action at Monza was former GP2 series’ champion Giorgio Pantano, who tested the new GP2 car also shod on Pirelli slick tires. His test was similar to Grosjean's, with slightly longer stints and a more regular presence on track.
