The recent winner of the Grand Prix of Germany, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in both free practice session Friday of the Hungarian Grand Prix on the slow and twisty Hungaroring.
Free practice 1
Driving his McLaren-Mercedes, Hamilton set the fastest time in the first practice session this morning.
Hamilton beat point standings’ leader Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull by 0.214 seconds with a lap of 1m23.350s, while two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso was third fastest for Ferrari.
Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber was fourth, despite a shunt late in the session, ahead of Jenson Button in the second McLaren and Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari.
Indian Karun Chandhok drove Jarno Trulli’s Team Lotus car in the morning, setting the 20th time while Bruno Senna was behind the wheel of Nick Heidfeld’s Lotus Renault, and set the 15th fastest time.
Free practice 2
As the track became faster after lunch, Hamilton repeated his performance, setting the ultimate pace and this time beating Fernando Alonso in his Ferrari.
In a session dominated by long runs and analysis on the relative degradation of Pirelli's supersoft option and harder prime tires, the McLaren driver went fastest on an early short run with his red-marked tires 50 minutes in and was never headed thereafter, though it was Red Bull that looked strong in the late soft-tire analysis.
