Autosport’s Jonathan Noble reported on Monday that Sir Stirling Moss has been seriously injured in a silly lift accident that happened this past weekend at his home.
Moss, the winner of 16 Grands Prix between 1851 and 1961, “fell down three floors of a lift shaft following a malfunction with the lift doors - when they opened on the third floor while the lift was still a floor further up”, Noble wrote.
Moss, aged 80, broke both ankles and four bones in his feet, plus suffered further damage to his vertebrae, in the fall. Luckily he did not suffer any internal injuries.
The British race car driver was admitted to the London Hospital and then later moved to the Princess Grace Hospital, following the intervention of Professor Sid Watkins. Doctors hope he can be moved out of intensive care later on Monday, and his life is not in danger.
"Amazingly he did not suffer any internal injuries," confirmed British Racing Drivers' Club secretary Stuart Pringle, who said Moss has been operated on.
"Lady (Susan) Moss has just telephoned me and although Sir Stirling is not in good shape, he is no longer in danger," he added.
