Seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher set the fastest time on the second day's testing at Jerez de la Frontera, Spain at the wheel of the 2011 Mercedes W02.
The German team led by Ross Brawn used last year's car to gain as much information about the new Pirelli tires from a stale platform. Schumacher set a 1m18.561s during a morning stint.
The Mercedes AMG team indicated that this morning's programme focused on comparisons and evaluation of the soft and hard compound Pirelli tires. Schumacher then concentrated on a set-up programme with the new tires in preparation for the debut of the 2012 car in Barcelona.
Nico Rosberg will take over the car tomorrow for the team's final day of testing in Jerez.
Mark Webber was second fastest overall, but fastest of the drivers using a 2012 car. Webber, driving the new Red Bull RB8 Renault set a 1m19.184.
Australian Daniel Ricciardo was third fastest in the Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso STR7. The Italian team put 100 trouble-free laps on the new car, with a mix of short and long runs, trying three different tire compounds.
Frenchman Jules Bianchi began his Sahara Force India career with a fine fourth fastest in the Mercedes-powered VJM05 before handing over to Paul di Resta for the afternoon.
Di Resta set the sixth fastest lap behind yesterday's fastest man, Kimi Raikkonen in the Lotus E20.
Felipe Massa was at the wheel of the Ferrari F2012, as he continued working on data acquisition relating to car behaviour. The Scuderia used flow-viz paint on the rear wing to study the behavior of aerodynamics.
