McLaren call it RW80, Red Bull call it the 'f'ing duct'

The actual name for McLaren's so-called 'F-duct' is the 'RW80'.

It is believed the F-duct name was coined by the specialist media, either in reference to the mere shape and appearance of the air inlet, or the fact it is mounted on the red 'f' of the upper monocoque Vodafone branding.

'RW80', however, is the official name for the rear-wing stalling system, with McLaren describing its innovations with an acronym (Rear Wing) following by a number based on iterations.

Red Bull's Christian Horner joked in Shanghai: "We call it the F'ing duct." Sebastian Vettel added: "This morning I had a good opportunity to see it at work myself, when I was running behind Jenson. In the middle of the straight he just left me, as if I was standing still."

Renault working on its own F-duct

Renault has changed its mind about not developing an F-duct system for its R30 car.

In Shanghai, with two long straights, the F-duct is proving a significant straight-line advantage, and Sauber, Ferrari, Williams and Mercedes have also been running similar systems in China.

Team boss Eric Boullier told France's Auto Hebdo on Saturday: "We are actively working on developing our own F-duct. Two people are working on it full time."

Meanwhile, Mercedes' system apparently worked well in Friday practice. It is believed both Schumacher and Nico Rosberg are running the F-duct on Saturday.

Williams debut F-duct on Saturday

With the parts held up in Chinese customs until late on Friday night, Williams only got its new system up-and-running on Saturday morning.

However, after initial runs, it is believed the British team has decided not to use the F-duct in qualifying and the race, with Rubens Barrichello heard on the radio to say it is not working properly.

Team's technical director Sam Michael, who had trouble obtaining a visa, was expected to be trackside on Saturday.
