This system also works as an excellent market research tool, as they can bring up their "virtual vehicle", place it on the screen with a backdrop of any exotic location that you care to mention, and then present that vehicle to perspective customers around the world to gauge their reactions. All this, before a single nut and bolt has been forged!
However, perhaps the biggest advantage that this new designing format brings is to allow the design team a much wider range in initial choice. In the past, because of the cost factors involved, typically only four models would have been formed in actual clay before the final design was agreed upon. Today, utilizing the new computerized tools available, numerous designs can be tested and modeled at speed, and so the initial choices become literally endless.
What this means to us, the consumers, is that Ford is not only be able to test its new designs quicker and more intensely, but once those designs are given the go ahead, it can enter into production much faster. I guess that's what they mean by Speed of Design!
