All that's gone with the new model, which is lot less effort and a lot more fun to drive. Indeed, thanks to a much stiffer chassis and the addition of independent suspension in the rear, it's about as much fun to drive as these things ever are.But mostly the new Expedition is simply a more pleasant place to spend time, for many reasons. For example, not only is it easier to drive, it's quieter inside. Those two changes make it less stressful and that makes it less tiring.

This will put you in a better frame of mind to enjoy some of the interesting and useful things in the 2003 Expedition.

Far and away, the third row seats that power-fold into the floor are going to attract the most attention, since they're a breakthrough in SUVs that most users will find a wonderful addition. For now, unfortunately, they're only on the very upscale Eddie Bauer model. Ford of Canada wants to make it worthwhile to go to that model, but customer pressure might force them to make the power seat available on less-expensive models as an option.

The other seat feature that will attract attention is the middle portion of 40/20/40 second row, which slides forward so that kids in child seats are nearer the grownups in the front. A small thing, but it will be popular with many.

For the record, it must also be noted that Ford has gone to a great deal of trouble to make the new Expedition as proficient off-road as it is on-road. This will interest many potential buyers, of course, but only in the theoretical way that off-road ability is useful in any SUV.

That is to say, if Expedition buyers ever actually took their vehicles off the pavement, they would be hugely impressed. But hardly any of them ever do take their vehicles off the pavement, so it's pretty much just an interesting dream.
