The all-wheel-drive system is useful in delivering better traction on slippery roads, and that's to be applauded. Further, the optional AdvanceTrak system provides for better handling on corners with a slippery surface because it mates stability control with the all-wheel-drive. This is worth thinking about.Expedition's all-new braking system yields vastly improved pedal feel, reduced fade and shorter stopping distances. A new Brake Assist feature interprets driver intent to provide full braking power in an emergency, even when the driver doesn't immediately apply full force to the brake pedal. This can reduce braking distance 20 percent or more in real-world conditions.

The basic engine is the 4.6-litre V8 delivering 230 hp at 4750 rpm and 293 lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm, but undoubtedly most people will want the 5.4-litre Triton V8 delivering 260 hp at 4500 rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm.

The bigger engine does get the Expedition rolling pretty well, but this is a BIG vehicle, so it will never be a dragster. Passing is fairly uneventful, however, and that's probably the most important thing.

While the big seat advances are in the second and third rows, it's the front seats that will be used the most. Here, too, there are advances that buyers will find welcome.

The front seat is available with either captain's chairs and a floor console, or a split bench with fold-down armrest.

The instrument panel is all new and should appeal to a lot of people. The four big circular vents with their metal rings do a great job of ventilating the front seats, but I didn't like them. They looked too mechanical and dominated the look of the dash.
