Ford Canada announced that they will be cutting 500 jobs at their Oakville plant in Ontario. These layoffs will mainly affect the body and paint shops, where one shift will be eliminated.
Ford's sales have been dropping in North America due to rising fuel prices and the high level of debt of Americans. The manufacturer expects to see a marked decrease in its sales, which should drop from 16 million units sold in 2007 to 14 or 14.5 million in 2008.
To counteract this, Ford has to reduce its vehicle production, hence the announcement. Before proceeding with the job cuts, the manufacturer is encouraging its workers to take an early retirement. Despite these measures, 350 employees will soon be laid off.
