Ford will expand its new Auto Start-Stop technology from hybrids to conventional cars, crossovers and SUVs in North America beginning in 2012.

According to the company, direct fuel savings in the city will range from 4 to 10 percent, depending on vehicle size and usage.

A driver who stops at a red light for a minute or two will notice that the engine shuts off to limit fuel consumption and CO2 emissions – and springs back to life when the brake pedal is released. When the engine is off, all of the vehicle’s accessories like the stereo and air conditioning function normally.

Start-Stop has been fitted to a couple of Ford models since 2004, including the hybrid variants of the Ford Escape and Fusion as well as the Lincoln MKZ. Customer feedback actually encouraged the automaker to expand the application of Auto Start-Stop. A number of Ford owners cite this technology as their favourite.
