Our apologies if the headline caused any unfounded excitement. The AZ wagon is a creature of the Japanese market- and there are no plans to sell them in Canada.
It's a boxy looking little machine- perhaps intentionally, to compete with the Scion Xb from Toyota. The look is pure Japanese, right hand drive and all, though it's nonetheless a charming ride.
The Custom Style variation of the AZ wagon "unites the excellent packaging and functionality of current AZ Wagons with brazen and stylish exterior design and a high quality interior finished with a black motif" Mazda says.
Styling upgrades include a chrome grille, HID lighting, clear taillamps and an exclusive grille. There is a special wrap-around bumper too, and turn signal repeaters can be fixed to the side-mirrors. These are features common to the more expensive models roaming our shores.
Two levels are offered to customers after the AZ Custom Style Wagon. The DI model is powered by a direct-injection turbo engine, while the X model makes due with dual variable cams. A four-speed automatic transmission is fitted to both models, and all wheel drive is available on either. All models come standard with a high-performance stereo system and even Mazda's advanced keyless entry and start system.
Interestingly, pricing for a loaded all wheel drive DI Turbo model, in Canadian dollars, is just $15,400!
