GM News:

With a 25% share of the market, GM remains the #1 manufacturer in Canada. This year, GM is offering slew of new models of which many will breathe new life into a line up of cars that was beginning to show its age. To begin with, the Cavalier and Sunfire will bow out of service and be replaced by the new Cobalt and Pursuit. Exclusive to the Canadian market, the Pursuit is only available as a sedan while the Cobalt can also had as a coupe. The most impressive version is of course the SS. Its supercharged Ecotec 2.0L engine is squarely aimed at the SRT-4 from Dodge.

As far as minivans are concerned, GM has introduced the Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, Saturn Relay and Buick Terreza, which are all nearly identical. Depending on the version, it is possible to get a regular or extended wheelbase. Also, high-end models have AWD as an option. All these vehicles are delivered with a 200 hp 3.5L V6.

A redesigned 2006 Impala was displayed for all to see. The Impala's lines have more fluidity and make the car look more modern. The base engine has grown to the 3.5L V6. Optional motors include a 3.9L V6 that develops 240 hp and the SS inherits the 5.3L V8 equipped with DOD (displacement on demand) used in the Bonneville GXP. Its output is of 303 hp.

Launched during last spring, the Equinox replaces the old Tracker in the compact SUV segment. With more interior space and equipped with a 185 hp 3.4L V6, its abilities and capabilities are quite different from the Tracker. So that everyone will be happy at GM, Pontiac receives its own version called the Torrent.

Since the dissapearence of the Camaro and the Firebird, the only real sporty car offered by GM was the Corvette. Unattainble by many enthusiasts, it will shortly be joined by the Pontiac Solstice which has made its official debut at the Montreal show. This small roadster is a very late reply to Mazda about the Miata. Under the hood, we find a 2.4L Ecotec 4-cylinder engine that develops 170 hp.

As odd as it may sound, the Saab division now has its own SUV. It is directly derived from the Trailblazer, Envoy and Rainier. Simply called the 9-7X, it takes just about every aspect from the other trucks while adopting Saab styling cues such as the front grille.

The 2005 Pontiac G6 replaces the Grand Am. Its outer dimensions are smaller than the Sebring and similar to those of the Mazda 6. The interior plastics remain unfortunately on the cheapish side. The base engine is the 3.5L V6. The GTP gets the 3.9L V6. For both engines, only an automatic transmission is offered.

Unchanged over many years, the Cadillac Seville is finally replaced by an all-new STS that clearly makes it the CTS's big sister. The V6 is now a 3.6L with 252 hp while the V8 is the 4.6L Northstar that develops 320 hp. Now produced as a RWD vehicle and as an optional AWD. Its price range begins at $55,995, $10,000 less than last year's Seville SLS.
