"The single most important thing computers will do in 10 years time is drive a car," Google's project director Anthony Levandowski said. Rumour has it that an important announcement in that respect is coming up.

Something is around the corner.

But first, Google must prove that their software can drive a car better than humans, and most importantly, not crash. They claim around a track, self-driving cars fitted with their program were a handful of seconds faster than those driven by an actual human being.

According to Levandowski, Google is looking for a partnership with some automotive manufacturers, in order to finish off the product, and are actually already discussing with big names.

"Constructors have figured out it's coming, so they want to take part in it," Levandowski adds. "They don't all want to be pioneers, but some of them do have the same spirit as ours. That's who with want to get in business with."
