GP Prep Racing Drivers Academy, now known as GP Prep - Academy for Formula One Drivers has received official approval from Bernie Ecclestone and Formula One Management (FOM) for the use of the Formula One name.
GP Prep is the only test and development academy for Formula One drivers.
GP Prep founder and CEO, Anthony Hamilton said: “We look forward to working closely together with Formula One and most importantly all 'rookie' racing drivers to help identify, develop and nurture great talent and to bring a new world of opportunities to the business of Formula One.”
GP Prep was established in October 2009 and aims to help aspiring racing drivers achieve their dream of success in motorsport and Formula One by providing opportunities to test current Formula One cars in a controlled environment.
F1 teams have complained that under current regulation their test drivers do not get the chance to get sufficient testing time during the season.
Last year, Jaime Alguersuari was put in the Toro Rosso of Sébastien Bourdais in the middle of the year without sufficient track time under his belt.
GP Prep has created and developed a series of Formula One test programmes run and maintained by Formula One personnel and engineers. 'Rookie' drivers will have the opportunity to gain track time, mileage and experience and to be graded and assessed for development or recommendation to Formula One.
To qualify for entrance to the GP Prep Academy, based at the Silverstone circuit, racing drivers must possess the necessary experience in one or more of the following junior or senior Formulae - Formula One, DTM, IRL, Champ Car, GP2, Formula Renault or equivalent, Formula 3 or equivalent, Formula Renault, Formula BMW, or other equivalent series.
