Esteban Gutierrez is the new championship leader after the Mexican claimed race 1 victory. Ryo Haranto clinched victory in Race 2.
ART’s Esteban Gutierrez took a dominant Race 1 win at Istanbul Park leading from the start to finish. The Mexican driver capitalized on a terrible start by pole sitter Nigel Melker and led the entire race.
A string of fastest laps and a flawless drive during the race ensured Gutierrez finished the 15 lap race a huge 10.5 seconds ahead of second place man Manor Racing’s James Jakes. Addax Team’s Felipe Guimaraes was another driver hot off the start line and put in a solid drive to third.
Rio Haryanto didn’t let the pressure of starting on reverse-grid pole get to him in Race 2, and made the perfect start holding onto the lead into turn 1. Haryanto then drove the great race to take victory at Istanbul Park, 2.2 seconds ahead of his nearest rival Miki Monras.
After setting the pace on Friday, the win will make up for a difficult qualifying session for the young driver yesterday. Haryanto has now shot up to 7th in the standings from 16th with 7 points.
Status GP’s Robert Wicken’s weekend went from bad to worse. A battle with Jakes left the former series points’ leader with a rear wheel puncture forcing him to take an unscheduled pit stop. Back out on track the Canadian driver posted a series of fastest laps but was already too far back to take advantage and collect any points finishing the race in 21st spot and third in the standings.
Gutierrez leads with 22 points ahead of teammate Alexander Rossi who has17 points. In the Teams standings ART Grand Prix have increased its lead to 40 points. Jenzer Motorsport is in second with 19 points, and Status GP has 17 points in third spot.
