A 325 horsepower race-car version of Volkswagen's new Scirocco has made its world debut not at an auto show, but at a GTI owners meet. The event took place yesterday, and put the upcoming model on display amidst crowds of Volkswagen enthusiasts.

Tomorrow, the same 'Scirocco GT24' will participate in a 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, driven by a team of legendary drivers. With these two appearances, the new Scirocco will be seen at two major events for car nuts at the same time. Talk about target marketing!

Volkswagen's Chairman for Development, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, comments on the look of the GT24. "This car doesn't need to be driven to look fast. The Scirocco GT24 with the blue-white finish sits so low on its extended wheel wells that a hand will not fit between the wheel arch and the tire. Yet the race car remains unmistakably a Scirocco from every angle. Just even wider, even longer and even lower."

Hackenberg will be driving the Scirocco in the race, alongside legendary drivers like rally world champion Carlos Sainz and Hans-Joachim Stuck, a three-time winner of the 24-hour Nürburgring race. Stuck also won the very first such race in 1970.

Powering the Scirocco racer is a 2.0 litre, turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder engine with a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), which will be available on the production version. It's yet unclear if the GTI-based sports-car will come to our shores, though it would arrive towards the end of this year if it did.
