BMW is sending 25 of the 100 Hydrogen Powered 7-Series sedans it has created to America, for an evaluation program. These machines, which represent the leading edge in production-ready hydrogen drive technology, will wind up in the hands of politicians, business leaders and...Will Ferrell.
In launching the program, BMW handed the first set of keys over to the Hollywood actor who will have the Hydrogen 7 for daily use. BMW stresses that this model isn't a prototype, but a ready-for-the-road production model which has successfully passed the entire Product Development Process and met all standards required for use on U.S. roadways.
While running on Hydrogen, the car uses electric power formed by a complex reaction where the compound is converted into electrical energy and water vapor. In effect, hydrogen-driving emits only water vapor- significantly reducing CO2 emissions.
Though the technology is a far way off from becoming mainstream, BMW believes that it will replace petroleum, as a long term alternative to fossil fuel.
