Honda expands production capacity of Civic, demonstrates flexible manufacturing technology
It's the buzz word of the month: Flexible Manufacturing. Ford, having just spent a Kings ransom on fitting its plant with the cutting edge new technology, sees a big future for the new models it will help them to more efficiently create.
According to Honda, the same sort of technology will allow them to meet increasing demand for its Civic Sedan which will be produced for the first time at Plant 2 in early 2007. The plant is located in Alliston, Ontario and has thus far only built light trucks since it opened in 1998. Part of the option for added Civic capacity at Plant 2 comes from the decision to slowly move production of the North American Pilot model to a plant in Lincoln, Alabama.
Jim Miller, Executive VP of Honda Canada says "Canada's best-selling car for eight consecutive years is gaining a boost in production to meet the needs of more consumers across North America."
He mentions that the opportunity has allowed the company to take full advantage of the flexible manufacturing system, allowing demands to be met in a timely fashion.
Other plans at Honda include a North American production expansion of 200,000 units by way of a new plant in Greensburg, Indiana, as well as corresponding 200,000 unit engine plant near the current Alliston facilities.
