Did you know that...
Also, did you know that the automaker has been partnering with the Swedish government and the national association of insurance companies since 1970 to study accidents involving Volvos? So far, more than 36,000 accidents have been recorded and analyzed. A Volvo team is available 24 hours a day to get on the site of major crashes and collect all the data they can in order to ultimately design better and safer cars. A research group uses these data to set one or several improvement goals with regard to active or passive safety. Said goals start with feasible research projects and then evolve into prototypes that are tested in real-world conditions. When there's nothing but green lights, production can take place.

Child seat
Did you know that the weight of a baby's head compared to the rest of the body is the equivalent of a normal adult wearing a 10.5-kilo helmet? The Volvo Center invites people to put one on for comparison's sake. With all the data collected, Volvo developed in 1972 a special child seat offering optimum protection during a collision. A number of seat models have been developed over the years, culminating with the famous "booster seat" in the Volvo XC90.

What about the driver?
Every occupant needs to be fully protected, according to Volvo, and the driver has to feel comfortable and confident behind the wheel so as to remain alert at all times. With that in mind, engineers like Thomas Broberg are designing the safe cars of today and tomorrow.

Picture this: you're driving, there is no danger, no distraction and no phone call. You feel totally in control. But suddenly, you spot an obstacle on the side of the road. You have to react quickly. If you do so, the car will assist you in avoiding the obstacle (steering and braking), but if you don't, or if you can't seem to be able to execute the necessary avoidance maneuvers, the car will have to do it for you by way of its electronic stability control and emergency braking assist systems. Should a collision prove unavoidable, the car needs to be prepared (in a few milliseconds) to mitigate the force of impact with the help of airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, etc..
