Two studies by Lex Autolease, the UK's largest car rental company, suggest that hybrids will outnumber gasoline-powered vehicles by 2020.

According to one poll, 78 percent of business drivers believe that hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) will be the most popular choice for fleets.

"Diesel has already overtaken petrol as the fuel of choice in the fleet sector, which is renowned for being an early adopter of new vehicle technologies," said Chris Chandler, principle consultant at Lex Autolease. "But, clearly, there is an expectation that the move away from petrol will accelerate as hybrids and EVs now begin to attract greater market share."

In Europe, diesel engines have taken the markets by storm as a result of the skyrocketing gas prices. From that point of view, the Lex Autolease studies make a lot of sense. However, many if not most North American drivers would welcome the aforementioned conclusions with scepticism.

But the truth remains that petrol is a non-renewable energy source and prices will always keep rising. Someday, hybrids and EVs will surely outnumber conventionally-powered cars. It may take longer than 10 years, but it's coming sooner rather than later!
