IIHS top safety picks for 2006
For the first time in their history, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has created the ultimate award for the cars and trucks that have earned high marks in every type of crash test performed by the Institute.
Those that were chosen needed to grant the best possible protection for the occupants in frontal, lateral and rear impacts. Because most cars and trucks are now tested from all angles, it makes sense to proceed with picking the best overall results and elevating those models past a "Best Pick" rating in light of the fact that they clearly surpass their competitors.
To receive a Gold rating, a vehicle must earn a "Good" rating in frontal and
lateral impacts. As well, seat and head restraint test results must also be rated "Good". The criteria for a Silver rating are the same "Good" results for impact protection plus an "Acceptable" rating for head and seat restraints.
The results are divided by category. At the moment, no minivan has earned aTop Safety Pick as not one has attained the required criteria. There are no SUVs for the moment either because of insufficient testing.
