Jacobs says the new hybrid system has several modes of operation.
-When the vehicle is stationary, the engine is turned off and fuel consumption is zero.
-During startup and acceleration, the engine operates in low-speed valve-timing mode with an assist from the electric motor.
-During rapid acceleration, the engine operates in high-speed valve-timing mode with motor assist.
-During low-speed cruising, the valves of all four of the engine's cylinders are closed and combustion is halted, with power coming from the electric motor.
-During gentle acceleration and high-speed cruising, the engine operates in low-speed valve-timing mode to power the Civic.
-During deceleration, the valves of all four of the engine's cylinders are closed and combustion halted, while the motor recovers the maximum amount of energy released during deceleration and stores it in the battery.
