Peter Dempsey came back from behind in the last seconds to win the Indy Lights Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Dempsey was fourth when the leaders started the final lap but managed, along with Gabby Chavez behind him, to get the best of both leaders Carlos Munoz and pole sitter Sage Karam coming out of the final corner.

The four drivers were coming toward the finish line four-wide but the Belardi driver was able to get his nose in front of the others to win by a mere 0.0026 seconds.

Chavez was second ahead of Schmidt teammate Karam and Andretti racer Munoz.

A surprising ending since the race had been between Karam and Munoz from the outset; the only change came on Lap 12 when Munoz, who will also race in the Indy 500, overtook Karam for the lead.

Title contender Jack Hawksworth was one of only two retirees; the Briton falling out of the race after glancing the wall at Turn 4.

Earlier, Kyle O'Gara lost control and hit the barrier at the same corner.
