Esteban Guerrieri became yesterday, in the St. Petersburg, the eighth driver to earn the Sunoco Pole Award in their debut Indy Lights series' race.
Guerrieri jumped to the top on the final green flag lap of the 45-minute session. He leapfrogged Conor Daly who was in first place at that moment.
Josef Newgarden completed a 1-2-3 for Sam Schmidt Motorsports. He'll be joined on the second row by Stephan Wilson (1:07.9582) in the No. 5 Andretti Autosport car.
Sam Schmidt Motorsports cars have started 1-2 on 14 occasions, the most recent one at the Firestone Freedom 100, last May. It's also the fourth 1-2-3 start for the team.
Peter Dempsey, driving the No. 36 Pulse/O2 Racing car, and Gustavo Yacaman, in the No. 2 TMR-Tuvacol-Xtreme Coil Drilling car for Team Moore Racing, will share the third row.
Canadian driver Mikael Grenier was unable to take part in the qualifying session because of the damages his car sustained this morning in an accident after a complete brake failure.
He is expected to start the race from the last spot on the grid today.
