2011 IZOD IndyCar championship runner-up Will Power (Team Penske Chevrolet) earned the first pole position of the 2012 season and set a new track record on the street circuit of St Petersburg.
The Australian set a time of 1min01.372s, breaking the previous record of 1min01.603s.and showing that the new DW12 is up to the task.
Countryman and teammate Ryan Briscoe made it a one-two for Penske, both drivers largely ahead of third place qualifier Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport Chevrolet).
James Hinchcliffe (Andretti Autosport Chevrolet), Helio Castroneves (Team Penske Chevrolet) and Simon Pagenaud (Sam Schmidt-Hamilton Honda) completed the Fast-Six roster.
Even though they showed pace, the Ganassi-Honda duo of Scott Dixon and reigning champion Dario Franchitti finished respectively only 7th and 10th.
Former Formula One man Rubens Barrichello, seems to have gotten his act together after having experienced difficulties. He's put his KV Racing DW12 Chevrolet in 14th.
The best Lotus-powered car was the one driven by veteran Alex Tagliani (Bryan Herta Autosport), who finished 17th.
