Jaguar is gearing up to deliver a sports car based on the C-X16 concept, seen as the spiritual successor of the legendary Type E, and is also working on a compact sedan to take on the BMW 3 Series.

The athletic model will be launching a direct assault on the Porsche Boxster in the guise of a two-door coupe – maybe as early as next year.

Though physically similar to the breathtaking concept unveiled at the last Frankfurt Motor Show, it probably won’t be using hybrid technology but instead rely on a more conventional gas-powered engine.

Watch out, 3 Series!
Jaguar is also developing a compact sedan, the first since the Type X retired in 2008. At the time of launch it should sell for under $US 40,000, with the BMW 3 Series firmly in its sights.

The automaker plans on dropping a V6 and/or turbocharged 4 under the hood.

2013, a busy year
The sports car and compact sedan are the result of a 2.45 billion dollar investment by Tata Motors in Jaguar and Land Rover, earmarked for the development of new products.

There are few changes scheduled for 2011 and 2012, but 2013 will be a determining year for Jaguar. That’s when the XJ will be refreshed, the XK will be redesigned and a production version of the C-X75 (the hybrid supercar unveiled in Paris last year) will be introduced.
