Ask anyone to name a rugged vehicle that can endure the worst possible treatment and Jeep will probably be their #1 answer. But while the brand's 'Trail Rated' products boast legendary off-road capabilities, pickup truck lovers still can't get what they're looking for.

In 2005, when the Gladiator concept was introduced, the rumour mill immediately started turning and Chrysler said it hoped to develop such a vehicle in the future.

Unfortunately, the automaker's priorities have changed and the project once again finds itself on the back burner, according to Jeep president and CEO, Mike Manley.

“Our resources are fully dedicated to small vehicles, [developing new transmissions] and working with Fiat. There are none left to work on the Jeep pickup”, he explained.

All hope isn't lost, however. Manley did also go on to say that Chrysler has put considerable thought into the potential for the pickup, including sales in world markets.

This type of vehicle is particularly popular in the United States and parts of Asia (Thailand, for example), which might tip the scales. The Jeep boss was careful enough to avoid making any promises, though.

Several sources indicate that the production model would be based on the current Wrangler Unlimited, but once again, the company is leaving the door open.
