The sole practice session of the 24 Hours of Le Mans held Wednesday night started off on a dry track. The six hours of free practice provided a pretty good idea of what Thursday qualifying sessions will look like: a fierce battle between Peugeot and Audi, with Pescarolo and Aston Martin fighting for third place.

American actor Patrick Dempsey is one of the drivers of the Team Advanced Engineering Ferrari 430GT.

At around 8pm, the rain set in and the session became quieter with Peugeot and Audi swapping first position, with Pescarolo playing their part and even setting the pace in the fourth Peugeot 908 Hdi FAP.

Some teams decided to play it safe however, and focused on qualifying all of their drivers. Peugeot, on the other hand, ran a real 6-hour marathon, with the three drivers of the No 7 Peugeot 908 Hdi FAP putting in an amazing 79 laps, translating into a distance of 1076 km.

Grip conditions were sometimes treacherous, but there’s been no major problem. Audi captured the first two positions, with Allan McNish lapping in 3:30.708 in the No 1 R15, ahead of his teammate Marco Werner in the No 2 sister car. Weather permitting; these lap times will most probably be improved on tomorrow.
