Less people were killed on Canadian roadways in 2006 than in 2005, according to the latest Transport Canada statistics. In a yearly brochure called Motor Vehicle Traffic Collision Statistics, the government agency stated that despite an increase in the number of drivers on the roads, incidences of fatalities dropped by 0.6 percent. Injuries also dropped by 2.6 percent.
The latest information covers the 2006 calendar year, but dates back to 1987. As of 2006, there were over 22 million licensed drivers in Canada operating nearly 19 million passenger vehicles.
"Although there was a decrease in the number of lives lost on our roads in 2006, more needs to be done and we must remain vigilant," said the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "Reducing fatalities and injuries is an ongoing commitment with our partners, including other levels of government."
The latest stats are in line with a continually improving trend in our road safety numbers. Transport Canada says that road fatalities represent approximately 95 percent of all transport-related deaths, though these have declined by 32.5 percent since 1987.
