We all know that the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan back in March have had devastating impacts on domestic automakers, particularly in terms of production and sales. Parts shortages will soon become a thing of the past for Nissan, Subaru, Honda and Mitsubishi, but one could argue that Toyota will prove to be the biggest loser in the end.

And General Motors couldn't be happier.

Many industry experts predict that GM will reclaim the top spot in the world (based on sales volumes) which it lost in 2008 after a 77-year reign.

This week, Toyota released its outlook for the current fiscal year, saying it expects sales to be down 3 percent, or about 260,000 vehicles, and profits to fall $1.6 billion by the end of March 2012.

GM has yet to disclose any sales projections, but it remains the leader in the two largest car markets, namely China and the United States, while gaining new market shares in other parts of the globe.

Despite possibly losing the #1 automaker title ans possibly splipping to third or even fourth place (as per variois experts) benefiting Volkswagen, Hyundai and Ford, Toyota stays positive.

A few days ago, company spokesman Steven Curtis said their priority is to be the leader in quality and customer experience, not necessarily the largest seller.
