But aside from simply tossing out interior components and other unnecessary parts, this Maserati makes use of composites to get to this desired weight, all of which are much lighter than the steel frame and body of the road-going production car.
Power for the Trofeo Light comes in the form of a 4.3 liter V8 engine, which of course is based off the production car mill. Aside from the typical increased air flow and installation of a less restrictive exhaust system, the race-tuned engine has been bored and stroked. It produces a maximum of 430 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, plenty to move a car of the Trofeo Light's weight.

To maximize the power, substantial development has gone into improving the car's aerodynamics. Add-ons include a front splitter, an adjustable rear spoiler and a smooth under tray such as on Ferrari's 360 Modena. Heavily flared fenders have been added too, but these actually impede aerodynamics while allowing for larger wheels and tires for enhanced grip.
Will these modifications help keep Maserati's new entry glued to the track and guided to the checkered flag before its rivals? That's difficult to say, but never discount the Italian marque's parent company Ferrari when it comes to motorsports. The Maserati Trofeo Light should be a force to be reckoned with.
