The Ujina Plant No.1 (U1), near Mazda's headquarters in Hiroshima, is where the all-new Mazda2 (known as the Demio in Japan) saw the light of day for the first time.
Robert J. Graziano, Mazda's Executive Vice President, greeted some 550 guests at the plant on Monday, May 21st. Mr. Graziano explained to all that the all-new Mazda2 is the first car of Mazda's new generation of products to evolve to the next stage. This new 2 is designed for the Global market and has been engineered to be extremely competitive in the sub-compact segment.
The new Mazda2 weighs 100 kg less than the outgoing Japanese market-only vehicle which will make it one of the most fuel-economical in its class. The slim-down process has not affected the vehicle negatively; it has more safety features than ever and, not to mention, the Mazda2 will offer one of the most dynamic drives of the category.
For the moment, it does not seem that the Mazda2 will be coming to Canada as a Mazda. It is rumoured that Ford may use the 2's underpinnings for its own sub-compact offering in the near future. It would be a shame if the Mazda2 bypasses our shores; it would certainly be a smashing hit.
