Mexico, the Land of British Sports Cars?

The new MG TF won't be coming to America or Canada anytime soon.

Planning a trip to Mexico? If you're a car nut make sure you drop by new MG/Rover dealerships set to open soon. That's right, Canadians and Americans might be denied by the British manufacturer but our Mexican friends are finally getting a few perks of their own.

A new importer, MG Rover Mexico, along with a $15 million USD investment, is opening six dealerships. Armando Martinez, the company's general sales manager, is confident that his network will grow to 20 outlets by the end of 2003.

Though some will think back to happy memories behind the wheel of a Rover P5 or P6, those who owned an ill-fated Sterling might not care that Rover isn't coming to Canada or the U.S. Bad feelings or not, the BMW designed Rover 75 has come a long way from its Honda based predecessor.

What cars are coming? To start, Mexicans will have the choice of the luxurious Rover 75 sedan and wagon as well as MG branded derivatives, the ZT sedan and ZT-T wagon. A new MG TF sports car, updated from the MGF, will round out the lineup.

So why choose Mexico instead of Canada or the U.S.? The decision revolves around a trade agreement between Mexico and the European Union that favors sales of European cars. Due to the amount of Canadian and U.S. production already taking place in our respective jurisdictions, there isn't likely to be a similar trade agreement made to attract the British brand north of the U.S./Mexico border to soon.
