We loved the cloth covered, highly bolstered seats and found them quite comfortable. For this ride, we managed to acquire a passenger, who despite the initial awkwardness of clambering past the flipped forward driver's seat, found the back row quite comfortable. Although she did experience a bit of lateral tossing during our hard cornering exercises, and for that I hope she accepts our humble apologies.

Powering the Colt CZT is a turbo-charged 1.5-liter engine that delivers 147 bhp and 155 lb-ft of torque. It doesn't exactly put it into the smoking-hot-hatch class of the Mazdaspeed3, but it has plenty of zip.

Suspension modifications include stiffer springs and shock absorbers, stiffer front sway bar and a more rigid body than the other models. We all commented on its stiffness, it felt firmly planted on the road and very taut. Steering was tight, and the wheel felt substantial and meaty. The clutch was high, the shifter itself was long and upright and the throws themselves could have been shorter. My partner again lamented the absence of a telescoping wheel which would greatly have enhanced his driving position.

The biggest chuckle of the day came when I left the stoplights more exuberantly than intended, chirping the tires and drawing open-mouthed stares from the high-school kids gathered on the corner.
