A few months ago, we learned that BMW was planning the launch of a new front-wheel-drive platform, although the identity of the models remained unknown. According to Automotive News, the architecture code-named ''UKL'' will first hit the market with the next-generation MINI Cooper, due in late 2013.
A Cooper-sized BMW variant will follow suit in 2014. Overall, 6 to 9 all-new vehicles will rely on the FWD chassis once the program gets into full swing.
Jim O'Donnell, CEO of BMW of North America, says the company hasn't decided which body styles to sell in the United States. However, he firmly believes that ''Americans are ready for small cars".
Available powertrains for these new models also remain unclear, although it's probably safe to assume that 3- and 4-cylinder engines will get the nod. Some might even come from a FWD hybrid sharing agreement recently signed with PSA Peugeot-Citroen.
