Champ Car Atlantic Continues to Grow
Probably one of the best open wheel series worldwide in 2006 is the new Champ Car Atlantic series, created out of the remnants of the
Toyota Atlantic series. The rumour mill continues to circulate, and more and more we are hearing that there will be a very deep talent pool when the series gets it's all new look in 2006.
Canadian names mentioned are Formula Mazda front runner James Hinchcliffe, and FBMW standout Kevin Lacroix. In addition, many European F3 drivers, former F3000 drivers, and even some GP2 drivers are looking seriously at competing in 2006. With a 'scholarship' prize worth in the neighborhood of $2 million U.S., the new Champ Car Atlantic series
is developing some serious momentum. So far, it is believed that over 40 cars are spoken for, and while that is a great number to begin with, the only chink in the armor could be delivery of the new cars in time for the season opener. Many teams are quietly nervous about the delivery dates, and that is probably the reason many teams are keeping their driver lineups close to their chest.
If it does come off as planned, it is highly likely that the Atlantic series has the very real possibility of upstaging the 'headline' show, Champ Car. Even with that, one strong 30 plus car field in open wheel racing is still better than none.
