A Real 'Battle' in Grand Am at Mexico
Hometown driver, Luis Diaz teamed up with Scott Pruett in their No. 01 TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing Lexus Riley and
put on a dominating performance en route to a victory in Saturday's Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve Mexico City 250 at the historic Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit.
Pruett, who had the pole, took the lead and built a 20-second gap before handing over to his Mexican teammate. Pruett pitted on the first full course caution, and Diaz went the distance without losing the lead.
The only 'real' battle on the track saw a lap 74 crash involving Chris Bingham in his Preformed Line Products/Coyote Pontiac Riley and JC France in the Brumos Racing Porsche Fabcar. The two crashed out together in the last corner, and once the cars stopped, both drivers jumped out and headed towards each other. First some screaming at each other, then a push - at which point Mexican officials thought this might get a little interesting. It did. One push led to another and then the two swapped blows to the stomach, proving
both are experienced veterans - never punch a guy with a helmet on in the head. France got the points for the takedown, I believe, at which time officials decided two drivers rolling around the tarmac with cars going by probably wasn't a good idea. As a result, both drivers have been suspended from the upcoming Rolex Series event at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and have been placed on open-ended probation. Additional penalties are probably forthcoming.
On the good side, this is probably the only time in history that the Daytona Prototypes are going to make every television highlight reel on Saturday night.
