Earlier this year former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya raced for points to lock into the Chase, now he’s thinking about wins.
Montoya was fastest in practice at the one-mile New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Then he went on to win the pole at a record speed of 133.431mph. It was his second pole this year.
He was almost underwhelmed by his personal performance when he said, referring to his Earnhardt Ganassi Chevy, “when they’re this good it’s pretty easy to drive it.”
More important, on his mind, was the race. “It’s a big thing because you get a good pit selection. We talked about before the weekend,” the Colombian-born ex-Formula One driver said.
“When you got a shot at winning you got to take a shot you can’t give any points away but you got to be smart.”
Tony Stewart, in a Stewart Haas Racing Chevrolet fills out the front row.
The top five spots were taken by Chasers including Kurt Busch, and Denny Hamlin in third through fifth respectively. Jeff Gordon, tenth and Kasey Kahne, eleventh fastest meant that only seven of the Chasers made the top twelve in qualifying.
Jimmie Johnson wasn’t happy in 16th and Brian Vickers was the slowest of the Chasers in 26th.
