In a move related to a large number of changes, in how NASCAR is implementing its racing policies in reaction to lower attendance and economic woes, it has been learned that the stock car series is looking for a replacement for John Darby who has been the Sprint Cup Series director since 2001.

According to an Associated Press report this is part of an overall restructuring plan which will move Darby to a senior management capacity overseeing officials in all of NASCAR’s national series.

While NASCAR’s senior series is seeking his successor he’ll stay on as NASCAR’s technical rules enforcer in the garage. The gruff-voiced, chain-smoking Darby has been successful in enforcing rules in the series and reducing the number of cheating violations.

"John worked really hard at a time when the sport was shifting to more templates, more rules, having to enforce those rules, and that was very hard to do because it was a mind shift and a shift in how things were being done," veteran driver Jeff Burton said Tuesday on NASCAR’s media tour. "I think John handled things very well. It was a very difficult task, and it will certainly be part of his legacy."

More information about the personnel change, and rules changes is expected on Thursday when the annual tour makes its stop at NASCAR’s Research and Development center.
