Driving conditions were tricky and treacherous on Saturday morning for the first practice session of the NASCAR Nationwide cars at the NAPA Auto Parts event in Montreal
It rained during most of the day. “Luckily, we got rid of our old, nine-year old rain tires last year,” a crew chief told us. “This year, we have brand new Goodyear rains of modern technology that features carbon fibre reinforced sidewalls”.
NASCAR officiels took a long time to decided if they would stage the qualifying session. At nearly 6 o’clock, the timed sessions finally started in (very) wet conditions.
Australian Marcos Ambrose, member of group 2, set the fastest time overall. Carl Edwards set the 2nd time and then Ron Fellows emerged 3rd quickest.
Jacques Villeneuve, Toyota No 32
The former F1 World Champion set the 2nd fastest time on his second lap. However, he got bumped one spot by Carl Edwards. He was finally ranked 6th.
Andrew Ranger, Toyota No 11
Good job for rookie Ranger who set the 11th time, and then the 9th fastest time despite his lack of experience and the slippery and treacherous conditions.
Jean-François Dumoulin, Chevrolet No 23
On his 3rd lap, Jean-François Dumoulin set the 11th fastest lap. He had to give way to Carl Edwards on his last timed lap and finished his run in 15th.
Alexandre Tagliani, Dodge No 81
Tagliani was out in the 2nd group. He set the 4th time but lost several positions when the top player’s went out.
Patrick Carpentier, Toyota No 99
Qualifying in the 8th and final group, Carpentier has real difficulties keeping his Toyota on the track. After three laps, unable to see because of a fogged winshield, he decided to pull into the pits and he ended up classified 42nd.
