A formal announcement is expected next week but, according to well informed sources, the merger between Petty Enterprises and Gillett Everham Racing is a done deal.

Reports claims that the new team will be rebranded under Petty's name which is NASCAR's oldest team (1949) and the one with the most victories (268).

Reed Sorenson, who had signed earlier this year with GEM, will be behind the wheel of the familiar No. 43 car when the season starts at Daytona.

Things have not be easy for Petty Enterprises in the last decade and owner and legendary driver Richard Petty had to even sell controlling interest in the team to an investment firm.

Even long-time sponsor General Mills left the team at the end of the 2008 season and signed on with rival Richard Childress Racing.
