As NASCAR officials look for ways to return to “core values” and increase attendance; cutting costs for fans and teams alike with two-day race weekend is off the table.
Brian France, NASCAR’s chairman of the board said, in a teleconference on Wednesday, “we have cut weekends back some from time to time. We're not cutting races back and not shortening those. You've got to remember qualifying, practice, is good content. It actually rates fairly well for all of our partners.”
On the surface it would seem that eliminating one day at the track would cut costs by 33 per cent. France said it’s not that simple, “which is why, if we were going to trim back the amount of time that the team spent at the track, there is an impact.
It's also promotionally difficult for the tracks themselves that are trying to build interest for the weekend in their local market when there's not practice and activity at the track.
So there is lots of thinking that goes into whether we would pull back the time on the track.”
Broadcast executives from the primary networks agreed with France. For now it’s business as usual with three-day race weekends for most venues.
