Neither Detroit nor Chicago can match the Big Apple in terms of auto show milestones and historic launches. The New York International Auto Show, which is over 100 years old, was the scene for world premieres that literally changed the course of history.

For instance, the first-ever Cadillac (1903) and the legendary Henry Ford's Model T (1909) made their international auto show debut in NYC.

The 2008 edition offers nothing as spectacular - and no revolutionary products. As the last major event of the auto show season, the NYIAS essentially showcases the new models that were introduced at previous auto shows around the globe.

Yet, some manufacturers like General Motors chose to use a different strategy: with a specific approach, they went all out to unveil all-new production vehicles.

GM's Vice President, Bob Lutz, was called on to introduce the new models that will arrive in Pontiac showrooms in the next few months, starting with the Pontiac Solstice Coupe and the 400-hp G8 GXP sedan.

Together with rap artist 50 Cent, Mr. Lutz also took the wraps off a modern El Camino called the Sportstruck. A cross between the G8 (identical front end) and a pickup truck, this 2-door vehicle will be available to North American buyers in the upcoming months. A 4-door variant is expected to join in next year.

For the time being, no official name has been chosen. The automaker wants to let consumers propose ideas and vote for their favorite name on a dedicated website. A media campaign to promote this El Camino has already started; in fact, many enthusiasts were sporting their special El Camino badge during the unveiling ceremony.

Another showstopper was the 2009 Nissan Maxima, a full-size sedan with the character of a sports car. We finally got our first up-close look at this 291-hp Maxima and its next-generation 3.5L VQ engine. A revised CVT as well as enhanced luxury and additional features are also bound to attract more customers to Nissan dealerships starting this July.
