Reports indicate that General Motors is about to shake up the Chevrolet Corvette as we know it in order to attract younger buyers and pose a more serious threat to Porsches, Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

According to The Detroit Bureau, an all-new turbocharged V8 engine will find its way under the hood as the Corvette gives birth to a new generation two years from now.

Largely inspired from European V8s, the new powerplant would be just slightly larger than 3.0 litres in displacement and use overhead cams instead of overhead valves, not to mention a dry-sump oil system that’s particularly well-suited to high-performance road courses rather than straight-line acceleration.

The addition of a turbocharger, which has been confirmed by a senior executive at GM, should provide a broad torque curve and maximum performance. The engine is expected to deliver in excess of 400 horsepower – the sort of number that would help the next-gen Corvette stack up well against the likes of a Porsche 911 or Lamborghini Gallardo.

Another source talked about a high-revving V8 that could climb all the way to 10,000 rpm.

Purists will still be catered to, though. Big-block engines will reportedly stay in the lineup.

Once the development is completed, the new turbocharged V8 may very well transfer to Cadillac's V-series.

Aesthetically, the C7 Corvette will likely borrow design cues from previous generations and offer a much more modern cockpit. It's also rumoured to go on a diet.

Looks like GM’s North American President Mark Reuss wasn't kidding when he promised that the next Corvette would be “completely different” from the very American sports cars that have come before it!
