Nissan recently published the safety characteristics of its sober-driver concept, a car designed to prevent its owner from drinking excessively and taking the wheel. This car is capable of detecting the driver's alcohol level and activate a bunch of measure that go as far as completely immobilizing the vehicle as needed.
There are two types of sensors in this vehicle. First, an alcohol-odour sensor that's very sensitive and integrated into the car's shift knob. This device can detect the presence of alcohol in the blood of the person that's about to drive away, by the perspiration of his or her palm. From a certain level of alcohol intoxication, the system locks up the transmission.
Second, in the seats are sensors capable of detecting the presence of alcohol in the ambient air. In both cases, the system emits an alert message from the navigation system.
Lastly, the car has an integrated camera located in the dashboard; this camera monitors the consciousness level of the driver, and his or her signs of inattention. If it detects the slightest sign of drowsiness, the system emits an alert signal and tightens the seat belt to get the driver's attention.
