Nissan goes green!
Offering more power and sportiness was only part of the Nissan plan for the NYIAS, however. The automaker also took this opportunity to highlight its "Green Program 2010" by showcasing a new electric vehicle called the Nissan Cube Denki Concept.

"This concept will never go into production, at least not for North America, even though we confirmed the arrival of the gas-powered Cube for 2009. That being said, it shows our strong commitment to alternative-energy vehicles and the quality of our green initiatives," adds the vice-president.

Basically, Nissan projects to implement a commercial fleet of electric vehicles in Japan by 2010. If all goes as planned, these vehicles could be made available to the general public by 2012.

"This is one of many initiatives in our Green Program, she points out. We put everything we had into our R&D work. We even came up with solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our assembly plants. But technology is where we are making the most progress."

Nissan is reportedly a few short steps away from releasing several diesel-powered models on the North American market, including the Maxima in 2010. Hybrid vehicles, developed with the help of French partner Renault, will also enjoy increased availability.

"Our strategy is set and we have developed a number of small, fuel-efficient vehicles. But this is only a first step. Mark my words: Nissan's Green Program will become even clearer pretty soon," promises Mrs. Le Grevés.
