The global democratization of photo radar demonstrates that police forces can count more than ever on automated solutions to catch delinquent drivers and concentrate on other matters. After speed detectors, motorists may well have to contend with sound detectors as well.

The Noise Snare, manufactured by Street Noise Reduction Systems Ltd, gives cities a helping hand in the fight against noise pollution. The company says that this sonic assault is caused by 3.6% of vehicles on the road that are not properly maintained or that feature illegal exhaust systems or other mods.

The Noise Snare can be installed at an intersection or on a police cruiser. The company says it’s inexpensive to operate and represents an excellent source of revenue, as there can be up to 300 and 400 noise violations on a busy road per day.

The Noise Snare may soon be coming to a city near you, but it will never replace the common sense of police officers in determining if a high-performance car (like a Porsche GT3 RS 4.0, for instance) or a Harley is actually breaking the law.
