Just about a year after setting an ice speed record of 331.610 km/h in an Audi RS6 shod with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded tires, Nokian has done it again — this time in an electric vehicle. Armed with the same rubber, test driver Janne Laitinen set a record of 252.09 km/h in an E-RA (Electric RaceAbout).
The E-RA is a project car of the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences that uses lithium-ion battery power, full carbon-fibre body and four electric motors (one per wheel).
The test took place on a 6-km track on Lake Ukonjarvi in Inari, Finland, in accordance with regulations set by the Guinness World Records Organization, which include that the ice be unaltered and contain no chemicals, and the tires be commercially available and approved for road use in the country where the record is attempted; however, because no official category for “electric vehicle on ice” yet exists, the achievement doesn’t qualify as an official Guinness World Record.
